Ah, dear, beautiful mortals: I am the Titan Selene. I feel the energy of the night and the joy in you mortals. It feeds me and makes me glow. As much as I love spending time with you, it infuriates me when you are arrogant and wasteful creatures.
Helios was released, suddenly and hard. He staggered back, staring at his unmarked flesh, rubbing it as the pain receded. His eyes lifted to the black obelisk as it vanished from sight, no longer needed. Helios is bound – Above, Below, and Between. Flesh, Blood, and Bone – forever.
I giggled nervously and suddenly felt like an idiot. How does she make me feel this way and lose myself? I took another swig of my drink and turned towards Artemis, ready as I was going to be for our very public first kiss.
She looked up at me from where she had rested her head and stroked my cheek. “I’m so glad you’re here, Sel. I’m so worried about Sayeh, but having you by my side is comforting. Would you stay by my side tonight?”
“What? NO, Akti!” I closed the distance between us and took her in my arms once more, her eyes filled with confusion and pain. “Artemis, look at me.” I took her face in my hands. “Artemis, you are my HOME…my light.”
I looked into the pool at the reflected moon and caught my face looking back at me. Darkened over and cold, I realized what must change…me. I closed my eyes and exhaled, a cold breath of air rushed out in a cloud. I have a home, a family. They are here with me.
I turned to leave as a cool breeze blew through the cave with a haunting howl, sending a violent shudder through me. The curse. The curse is now mine to bear, I thought as I made my way back up and out of the cavern.
I tried to pull away from his touch, but not with much effort. I looked up to catch his eyes and showed him the battle. He pulled me into his warm embrace and held me for a while. I didn’t cry, but his warmth filled me, and I felt more whole than I had in centuries. When I pulled out of his arms, we were both glowing slightly.
